    Big Wake Music

Big Wake is an original 4-piece band from Jersey City, NJ. With influences ranging from Southern and Prog Rock to Americana and Blues, Big Wake combines the types of melodies and lyrics you might hear from a singer-songwriter like Ben Folds or Conor Oberst, with organic and virtuosic improvisations that harness the power and ferocity of a straight up rock and roll jamband like the Allman Brothers and moe. Gerry Rosenthal (guitar/vocals) and Eitan Levine (keys) craft muscular leads with an intertwining duel-line guitar/keys attack, whil Jeff Fernandes (drums/vocals) and Marty O'Kane (bass/vocals) provide soaring 3-part harmonies while keeping the rhythm thundering underneath it all. They have released two full length albums, striking a balance between well-crafted, radio-ready songs and explosive improvisational musicianship full of catchy hooks, wide ranging dynamics, and tightly crafted instrumental breaks. Over the years they have shared the stage with artists as diverse as Better Than Ezra and Rusted Root. .

    "...pulsating, feel-good enemble..."

    Jamie Lubin, Huffington Post

"Big Wake is a record that is immaculately produced and performed, that could make this your favorite album of 2011...soaring vocals, melodic basslines, piano in the forefront, propulsive drums and crunchy guitar...his piano manages to be complimentary and trailblazing...basslines throughout are well-constructed- his line pops out and inspires more with each fill..."

"It’s not always easy to say that an album captures the soul of a band’s live sound and makes all the right advances on that sound in the production to make it a perfect, polished performance. Big Wake’s self-titled debut album is the exception. It has the power to transport its audience to the front row of one of their spirited live shows. It will thrive in living rooms, car stereos, and wherever else people are.

The album wastes no time taking launch with their first song Mindworks, setting the foundation for the upbeat, borderline nostalgic character of the album. The bright instrumentals strike the perfect balance with the well-placed vocal melodies, and the cathartic chorus perfectly contrasts the popping verses. It’s a sophisticated song that gets people moving, and like all the others on this album, this song will echo in your head long after it’s over.

As the listener journeys through, it becomes increasingly clear that the album is one of astonishing subtleties and surprises. From the unassuming guitar overlays during the piano-driven verses of Follow The Signs to the screaming electric guitars in the intro of the deceptively light-hearted and tender Letter To Me, there exist treats for the listener around every turn.

One of these treats takes the form of the multi-layered rhythm in the airy song Aaron and Anna, which pits a hypnotizing electric guitar against delicately placed piano keys and soulful vocals. This song’s groove is the quintessential example of the bands lighthearted, relaxed side, which comes to define many of the most warm, beautiful parts of this album.

Viewed at as a whole, this album is a unique expression of what happens when the heart of jam music is combined with the precision of studio recording. It’s a successful experiment in capturing the energy of live musicians. As it follows the form of a live performance, it evokes varying emotions at different times: jubilation at its most vibrant drops, and self-reflection at its softer moments. Throughout the ride, however, there exists an undeniable constant: the authenticity of the spirit behind the artists, the music, and the listeners that inspired it."
